Whip It and Flip It crowned champions

In its eighth year running, Diva La Futbol is a 5-a-side futsal tournament for women football players. This year, a record 56 teams took part in the competition which was held at Fico Sports Hub, organized by Singapore Management University’s women’s football team.

A bit of creativity was all it took for first-time Diva La Futbol participants Whip It and Flip It to take home the Champions Cup. Having gone through the grilling rounds of the group matches, knock-out stages, quarters, semi-finals to meet team Diablos in the final; Nuriah Bte Mohammed Noor scored the winner in just two seconds of the opening whistle.

They wasted no time looking for the back of the net. Two swift touches and a shot at goal proved to be sufficient to dismantle the Diablos’ defence. 24-year-old forward Nuriah smashed in a shot to give her side a valuable win.

She said: “We practiced this and came up with it today only. Most teams usually shoot straightaway so it becomes predictable. I got my teammate to be the dummy and to look as if she was going to take a shot, but the ball was passed to me and I scored the goal."

11-a-side field specialists, the team comprising of five NTU players and a full-time policewoman, entered their first futsal competition hesitant about their chances but raring to go towards the end.

“This is our first ever Diva competition. It’s a pleasant surprise for us to go this far and actually make it at the end of the day. When we first arrived we saw a lot of familiar faces who play in the women’s league competition so we thought we might have a hard time and we really didn’t expect to come off as winners today.

“But since we were here, we told ourselves that we did not want to go home early. We wanted to win this, and be crowned Diva champions.”

A continuous firing of shots from both sides had the goal-hungry crowd screaming and cheering at every attempt made. Having more than five years of field playing experience certainly paid off in the futsal pitch.

“Playing a 5-a-side match in a futsal pitch, one’s ball control and skills have to be very good. The pace is much faster and you don’t have the time and space to make mistakes, otherwise you will lose your possession to the opponent.”

Visibly tired yet ecstatic at the end of the evening, team Whip It and Flip It’s next major tournament is a division two tournament in August, and they promise to be back again next year to defend their title.

“We would like to thank our coach Selva Kumar for coaching us, and also to SMU for organizing this competition. We will be back next year! ”

Dear ladies,

We have read through the comments and feedback and would like to address certain issues. Firstly, there was strictly no manipulation of groupings in the first stage. Teams were randomly categorised into respective groups.

Secondly, it is of our interest that integrity is maintained and no one team has been shortchanged in this tournament. We understand that some participants may be upset over the fact that this competition allows lower league players to take part. However, it is our 7th year running this annual futsal tournmant and we hope to showcase a higher standard of play.

Diva La Futbol started out as a platform for amateurs when soccer is unknown as a sport for girls. Even though it is getting popular with girls recently, that ideal has never been compromised as we try to fit that in with the increase in competence of girls who play soccer.
In addition, with the list provided by FAS, we have made checks to make sure that there is no more than 1 national or league player in every team.

Nevertheless, the DLF VII organising committee would like to apologise for any unhappiness and dissatisfaction arose during the event. We are still in the midst of consolidating all survey results and your useful and constructive inputs will be put to due consideration for next year's diva la futbol.

In addition, we realised some time back that some Junior College Mid-Year Examinations fall on the week after the 23rd. We are currently in the midst of negotiations to obtain discount vouchers for soccer boots from various vendors. Due to some technical problems, we are unable to upload the registration & indemnity forms that need to be filled up and submitted to us (more details can be found on the forms). We are working on it but in the meantime, please contact Deep or Weiyang to obtain the forms.

This year's Diva promises to be more fun and dynamic than previous years, not only because of the performances we'll be bringing in, but due to the great playing facilities you guys will get to enjoy at Fico Sports Hub =).

With 8 sheltered and artificial turf pitches at Fico Sports Hub, this year's Diva La Futbol will carry on even in the event of rainy weather. In addition, look forward to receiving a lovely goodie bag on the day of the event.

We hope to see all of you again at Diva La Futbol this year and do pass the word around!

The Diva V committee will be setting up a booth on Wed 28 March and Thurs 29 March at SMU concourse (basement 1. near Maybelline)

UPDATE!

International Friendly Match Venue and Time:-

Singapore National Women's Team has invited Vietnam's Cua Ong Coal Women's Team for a friendly this month. This match will be played on Saturday, 25 November, 7.30 pm at Tampines Stadium.

This invitational match is intended to be a preparation for their upcoming AFC Pre-Olympics Qualifying Round, in which Singapore will play in a group that includes Vietnam, Thailand and Maldives. This will be a good opportunity for the lionesses to fine-tune their abilities before playing their crucial qualification next February.

Cua Ong Coal Women's Team, one of the top teams in Vietnam, has four national players in their ranks and was also the runners-up in their recent tournament, Vietnam Coal Women's International Football Championship 2006.
